VPS Web Hosting Server Guide

Posted under web site hosting by Steve Sikes on Thursday 24 February 2011 at 3:35 pm

VPS web hosting is a solution that was probably dreamed up by someone who liked Solomon’s wisdom. That’s because it essentially splits the server aka the baby into many little servers. But there’s no sword here and it’s all done with technology, with all the little virtual baby servers running on top of the main physical server.

Each virtual server offers all the same resources and control that one gets with a dedicated server. The big difference is that the price of a virtual server is much lower. In fact, virtual servers are priced closer to the basic shared package than to a dedicated server.

What happens is that the physical server has partitions – one for each customer. However, virtualization technology running on the main server ensures that the customer (all of them) see a full-fledged server that can be operated and administered independently. Each one has its own root access, operating system and other tools necessary. Each one can reboot whenever required without interfering with the other virtual servers or the main machine.

The virtualization can be full, where each server is a complete replica of an ordinary server and can be run just the same. Or it could a paravirtualized machine, where the virtual server OS would need some changes. The resource allocations and creation & destruction of requested virtual resources is managed by a hypervisor running on the main server.

Leaving aside the fact that the machines are virtual, the rest is the same as with dedicated servers, as far as customers are concerned. The customer has options to have the virtual server managed or self-administer it, install whatever OS is wanted, choose a web server, control panel and so on. Speaking of which, if a customer is running a website on a virtual server, then cPanel is the preferred panel. If the server is used for apps or services, then the useful one is Plesk.

Who is VPS web hosting most ideally suitable for? First are those who are feeling restricted by the limitations of a shared server package, but don’t find it feasible to pay for a dedicated server. Then there are those who need only specific aspects of a dedicated server, such as a heavy traffic site or custom application, a gaming server or streaming media site, etc.

Regardless of the purpose, the main thing to remember is that VPS web hosting offers all the freedom and control of a dedicated server, and comes without the price tag. Companies and site owners who switch to a virtual server as a temporary solution until it is possible to get a dedicated one often stay on the virtual one for a long time, because there’s not much difference operation-wise as far as the ordinary customer is concerned.
